97%The EA Forum is mostly about discussing ideas. But ultimately, the reason we discuss those ideas is to help us take actions that improve the world. Apply the opportunities to take action topic to posts that offer readers a way to get involved with useful EA work. This might be a call to action, an opportunity to volunteer, a job they can apply for, a request for help, or anything else. Get involved with EA Here are some ways to get involved with effective altruism via the EA Forum or elsewhere: * Jobs: Find job listings on the Forum, apply for high-impact career advising here or here, or visit the job boards on 80,000 Hours, Probably Good, Animal Advocacy Careers, Tälist (for alt protein jobs). * Volunteering: Find volunteering opportunities using the volunteering tag, by looking at the EA Opportunities Board, or by directly reaching out to high-impact non-profit organisations. * Donating: Support high-impact work by donating to high impact causes and taking an effective giving pledge. See the effective giving topic page for more resources. * Internships and fellowships: Find internships and fellowships on the Forum or visit the EA Opportunities Board, which lists everything short of full-time positions. * Startup ideas: Start a high impact non-profit by applying to Charity Entrepreneurship, or check out the relevant career profiles by 80,000 Hours here or Probably Good here. * Research ideas: Find a research topic by looking at the central directory for research questions, or use Effective Thesis to help find a high-impact thesis topic. * Funding opportunities: Seek funding for a high-impact project by posting using the funding request (open) topic, or apply for funding from EA Funds, one of Open Philanthropy's programs, or Meta Charity Funders. See the funding opportunities topic page for more resources. (This page is an experiment: please give us feedback on it!) 89%A system of non-tradable credits that flow between individuals like karma, hence proposed under that name, is a mechanism for repeated resource allocation that comes with attractive efficiency and fairness properties, in theory. In this study, we test karma in an online experiment in which human subjects repeatedly compete for a resource with time-varying and stochastic individual preferences or urgency to acquire the resource. We confirm that karma has significant and sustained welfare benefits even in a population with no prior training. We identify mechanism usage in contexts with sporadic high urgency, more so than with frequent moderate urgency, and implemented as a simple (binary) karma bidding scheme as particularly effective for welfare improvements: relatively larger aggregate efficiency gains are realized that are (almost) Pareto superior. These findings provide guidance for further testing and for future implementation plans of such mechanisms in the real world.
