Figlio di Elisabetta Farnese e Filippo V, il sovrano porta in sé il segno di una cultura illuminata che gli consentirà di avviare importanti azioni di rinnovamento. Negli anni ’40 del Settecento il re comincia a immaginare un progetto visionario senza precedenti sul territorio. Il sogno di re Carlo prende forma nel 1750, con l’acquisto del feudo di Caserta per la cifra di 489.348,13 ducati. L’idea di costruire una nuova capitale nell’entroterra, non lontano da Napoli, prende vita grazie ai progetti dell’architetto Luigi Vanvitelli (1700-1773). Il 20 gennaio del 1752, a Caserta, il re posa la prima pietra del cantiere che cambierà le sorti dell’intera area: la Reggia di Caserta.
