FreeKiosk turns an Android tablet into a locked-down display: a dashboard, a web page or a single app, full screen, protected by a PIN. It is free, open source (MIT) and has no ads. WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH IT • Show any web page full screen (WebView mode): Home Assistant, monitoring boards, menus, schedules, internal tools • Lock the tablet to one Android app and relaunch it if it closes or crashes (External App mode) • Offer a grid of dashboards that visitors can switch between (Dashboard mode) • Play videos and images from a playlist (Media Player) • Protect the settings with a PIN, start automatically at boot, hide the system bars • Use the app in English, French or Brazilian Portuguese FULL LOCKDOWN WITH DEVICE OWNER Set FreeKiosk as Device Owner once, over ADB, with no root, and Android itself enforces the lock: no home or recent-apps buttons, no notifications, no way to uninstall the app. The step-by-step guide is at freekiosk.app/docs. AUTOMATE AND MANAGE • REST API with more than 40 endpoints, for scripts and other tools • MQTT with Home Assistant discovery • Headless provisioning over ADB, to set up many tablets from a script • FreeKiosk Cloud (optional): follow your whole fleet from a web dashboard, send commands to the tablets and push app updates. The app works fully without it. WHERE IT IS USED Home dashboards, restaurant menus, hotel and museum information points, shop displays, event check-in, office lobbies. OPEN SOURCE AND PRIVACY The code is on GitHub (github.com/RushB-fr/freekiosk) under the MIT license. FreeKiosk has no ads and no analytics. If you enroll a tablet in FreeKiosk Cloud, it sends its status to that service; otherwise it only talks to the pages and services you configure. PERMISSIONS FreeKiosk needs internet access and permission to start at boot. Other permissions (camera, microphone, location, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, overlay) back optional features such as QR enrollment, motion detection or the lock-screen controls, and you decide whether to grant them.
