bitter fictions bitter fictions is devin friesen, usually playing around with gtr feedback or some other drone damage. heat spells, released 10 september 2020 1. protracted absurdities of all forms 2. waiting to begin 3. words demean thought heat spells was recorded at home over a couple of pleasant days in the summer haze of july 2018. i'm not a big summer person but our apartment had a small balcony shaded by large trees, a cool spot to sit and read next to the record player. a few blocks away there's a bench on top of a hill overlooking the city. i would occasionally run into friends walking and/or sneaking off to get high away from their kids there. it was nice + relatively idyllic in hindsight. i recall trying to get "inside" the sounds here, palpate the contours and densities, draw out the lights & shadows. a tactile approach w electric brush rattling, cranked headphones, plastic/wood vs metal/skin, time is no matter / shots at infinity drive - play til the tape's done + pop in the next one. "protracted" is deep in the heat, anxious swelter tearing/kicking/rubbing its fingers in the dirt, constant urging "keep going get through" til crops grow / clouds part / and the sun sets on the flickering edges of "words", basking in a warm glow. "words" has been a live staple for a few years and this was the genesis of it. it is usually played on tabletop for better resonance, or on top of an amp if yr nasty. download includes a fourth track "the stumbling blocks have all been thrown", a warm up recorded a day before the rest. could never decide where/whether it fit and still can't, apparently. d.f.
