Pancreatic cancer continues to represent one of the most dangerous cancers with just over a 10% survival rate. Considerable research is necessary to better understand a multiplicity of pathways for treatment, from new therapeutics to biomarkers to better use of existing medicinal science. Recently, the most prominent cancer health system and research center in Michigan received funding to help fund a pancreatic cancer study focused on the definition of new standards of care for patients undergoing chemotherapy. Specifically, the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute received $352,437 from the U CAN-CER VIVE grant to help support a study formally titled, “A pilot study of serial blood profiling for micro-RNA expression signature to Gemcitabine/Nab-Paclitaxel in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma patients.” With little treatment options, this study involves the collection of blood from the pancreatic cancer patient participants. The goal: Identify biomarkers that might predict if chemotherapy is working well or not. This offers new data to help potentially advance the standard of care, representing an incremental, evidence-based march of precision therapy. However, the study could also open new pathways for possible pancreatic cancer therapies.
