Marta Górnicka is a theatre director, author, singer and re-discoverer of the choral principle. She graduated at the Faculty of Drama Directing of the Aleksander Zelwerowicz National Academy of Dramatic Art in Warsaw, and the Frederic Chopin School of Music. THE CHORUS which she brings into existence as the sole protagonist of her performances is always both a critical tool to examine modern mechanisms of control, exclusion and violence, and a vehicle of community. In her works, Górnicka often probes the relationship between the individual and society. She experiments with new forms of collective voices. In 2019, she founded the POLITICAL VOICE INSTITUTE (PVI), a social laboratory for a modern chorus theatre at the Maxim Gorki Theatre, where she developed the CHORUS in its formal and political dimension. Górnicka created her first work in German: M(OTHER) COURAGE for the state theatre in Braunschweig, which was nominated for the prestigious German Theatre Prize Der Faust in the category of direction in 2016. In 2017, Górnicka's HYMNE AN DIE LIEBE (HYMN TO LOVE) made its debut in Germany at the Maxim Gorki Theatre. On the occasion of the Day of German Unity 2018, Marta Górnicka performed the GRUNDGESETZ in a libretto with a chorus of 50 professional and non-professional actors* in front of the Brandenburg Gate. Her project MOTHERS – A SONG FOR WARTIME, a coproduction of the Maxim Gorki Theatre, premiered in Warsaw in September 2023. Between 2020 and 2022, she was a member of the Artistic Advisory Board, which advised Artistic Director Shermin Langhoff on the artistic direction of the Gorki Theatre. Since then she regularly directs plays at the Gorki Theatre. In 2025, Marta Górnicka received the Prize of the International Theatre Institute (ITI) for her outstanding artistic work.
