Nobody is waiting for your first song. You have a name, a hometown, and a genre you'd bleed for. That's the whole inventory. No fans. No skills. No money. The charts are already full of people who got there first, and not one of them is moving over for you. So take it from them. • MAKE SOMETHING WORTH HEARING Write the lyrics. Cut the vocal. Build the beat. Sit with a track at 3am deciding whether it's the single or the skip. Upgrade the studio one room at a time and actually hear the difference. Then sequence an album — and know that the second you release it, the running order is frozen forever. • BET EVERYTHING ON A TUESDAY Pick the week. Pick the platforms. Buy the promo slots. Go exclusive, or go wide and pray. Then hit release and find out if anyone was listening. Some records detonate. Some vanish by Sunday. Both of them are yours. • READ THE FINE PRINT OR PAY FOR IT Ten labels want a piece, and every one of them buries something in the contract. Negotiate clause by clause. Hire a lawyer good enough to notice — a cheap firm won't even tell you what you signed. Miss an obligation and you get a notice. Ignore the notice and you get sued. Lose in court and they garnish the money you already spent. • THE CHARTS DO NOT CARE WHO YOU ARE You don't get placed on the Hot 100. You beat somebody off it. Streams bank country by country. Radio programmers decide if you get spins. Critics review your album — and everyone else's — and their verdicts follow you all the way to awards night, where you sit in the room and watch someone else's name get read out. Or yours. • GET IN THE VAN Route the tour city by city. Book the venues, hire the crew, price the merch, split the door with a promoter who's done this longer than you have. Build a setlist that sends the crowd home talking — because word of mouth sells tickets in the next town before you've even packed the truck. Then read the boxscore and see what it really cost. • A WORLD THAT MOVES WITHOUT YOU Rivals drop albums the week you were going to. Executives get fired and take your deal with them. Festivals rise and flop. Trends turn over whether you followed them or not. And in the middle of it: hundreds of people who remember exactly how you treated them. Every favour, every snub, every night you didn't show up. • THE MONEY IS NEVER SAFE Catalogues age. Old songs fade unless you keep them breathing — sync placements, remixes, re-records, reissues. Meanwhile the taxes land, the commissions come off the top, the loan is still due, and one bad year can end with your masters sold to somebody else's company. • UNDER THE HOOD 600 rival artists running real careers of their own. 14 genres. 11 skills. 10 career tiers, from bedroom artist upward. 10 record labels and 90+ named executives who remember what you did to them. 58 brands across 13 exclusivity shelves. 30 producers selling beats. 10 radio stations. 15 world festivals. 7 awards shows and 10 critics who cannot be bought. 26 certification bodies handing out plaques territory by territory. 45 life events that stop the week cold. And 12 fixers in a back room, if you turn out to be that kind of artist. 600 rival artists running real careers of their own. 14 genres. Every deal is one you should probably have read twice.
