(1991, Brisbane) In 2016, Emily Persson, then living in Brisbane, began exploring a wholly different style of painting. Inspired by the lush Queensland environment around her and her memories of many journeys across the Australian countryside throughout her life, her paintings became filled with increasing amounts of sprawling sea- and landscapes. This creative journey has led to Persson’s current position as one of Australia’s premier palette knife artists. Persson has been a passionate painter her whole life, once even challenging her parents’ anger for painting a large piece on her teenage bedroom’s wardrobe. Persson’s online audience since she first started on instagram has grown to nearly thirty-thousand followers, showing the strength that lies in the online connections created by sharing art and creative processes. After moving to South Yarra in Melbourne in 2017, by reaching new audiences in the virtual sphere, Persson was eventually able to become a full-time artist. Highly devoted to continually refining her artistic skills, Persson has since been invited to participate in a variety of group and solo shows in places such as Melbourne, New York and in Sydney. On her canvases, Persson creates highly textured scenes that capture their audience with their soothing views. The intuitive landscapes (which do not exactly reference specific locations) have seemed familiar to different people from all over the world. The artist’s joyful admiration of the natural world is omnipresent, whilst showing elements of human interference in such environments. This tension sparks thoughts on our unique existence and the space we inhabit. Persson creates a thick impasto with a distinctively soft and cool-toned colour palette. Moreover, these oil paints are applied with a palette knife inherited from her great-grandmother, thus beautifully cementing a multi-generational artistic lineage.
