AN OUTDOOR SUMMER MUSIC CAMP EXPERIENCE Usdan’s Music Department features large ensemble concert bands and orchestras, in addition to vocal ensembles, jazz ensembles, and piano and guitar classes of varying levels, all led by our incredible music faculty, made up of experienced educators and professional musicians and conductors. Students who are interested in taking Music for their Minor as well as their Major have the opportunity to do so by starting a new instrument or by continuing their instruction in a different instrument than the one they are using for Major.

At 3723', Balsam Lake Mountain is one of the Catskills 35 high peaks and is a popular hike because of its 360-degree views from the restored fire tower atop its summit. The hike begins at the Mill Brook Road Parking area, 8 miles from the intersection of State Route 28 and Dry Brook Road in Arkville. The hiking route to the tower begins across the road from the parking area. Here the Dry Brook Ridge Trail (see also entry for Pakatakan Mountain/ Dry Brook Ridge) follows an old road, ascending gradually to a junction a 2.2 miles. To the right begins the red-blazed Balsam Lake Mountain Trail, which climbs sharply into a conifer forest and reaches the summit in .75 mile. The restored fire tower cabin and ranger cabin are typically open to hikers on weekends from May through October, thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers. The fire tower may be climbed to the uppermost flight of steps when volunteers have not opened the entry to the lookout cabin. The views from this structure reveal the vastly forested surroundings of the Western Catskills along with many of the range's highest peaks, including nearby Graham and Doubletop Mountains. At just under 6 miles round trip, with an ascent of 1150', this hike to Balsam Lake Mountain is considered moderate -- usually 3-4 hours. Balsam Lake Mountain may also be approached from the south, by traveling to the terminus of the Beaverkill Road, a scenic 26-mile drive from Margaretville along the Pepacton Reservoir and up the Barkaboom Valley. The summit of the mountain is reached in 1.75 miles from the Quaker Clearing Trailhead.
