The project consists is part of an ambitious residential development plan in the harbor of Amsterdam, near the city centre. The urban concept, developed by West8 / Adrian Geuze, is marked by the confrontation between patchworks of high density individual houses and 3 massive housing blocs. All the houses are executed with individual entries and roof terraces. This density creates an introvert character that contrasts with the open surface of the surrounding water. The only specific element in our parcel is a perpendicular road that connects 2 boulevards with each other.The plan is organized following a check board pattern where built and open surfaces alternate; the basic type is a stacked house. Every house has its entrance on the ground level and a roof terrace on the forth floor.Within this scheme, the functions are organized in layers: ateliers, shops, entrances and garages on the ground level; entrance halls, sleeping rooms and bathrooms on the first floor, living rooms and kitchen on the second floor. The pavilion on the roof can be used in different ways according to the situation of the house in the urban plan. A semi-public circuit with backdoors leading to each house has been organized on the level of the roofs. This circuit is accessible by elevators and staircases. Two semi-public roof terraces are connected to these circuits. On the roof a landscape of pavilions and roof gardens unfolds.
