En 1883 lJoseph Thomson parte con el objetivo de encontrar el más corto camino entre Zanzibar y Uganda. Viajando desde Mombasa y dirigiéndose al Kilimanjaro atravesó dos veces el país de los masáis, que hasta entonces tenía el paso prohibido, sobreviviendo. Murió en Londres en 1895 a los treinta y siete años. Esta es la primera vez que Through the Masai Land (1885) se traduce al español.
