Frederick W. Dickinson is recognized as a pioneer photographer of the Sleeping Bear Dunes in Leelanau County. The purchase of a view camera in 1938 marked the beginning of Fred's career in landscape photography. He hand-colored many of his black-and-white prints. He produced an extensive collection of 5 x 7 negatives featuring the Dunes, Lake Michigan, Glen Lake, Fishtown in Leeland, and North Manitou Island. In addition, he photographed the Dunesmobile Rides that were popular with residents and tourists and are now considered historic. This book includes essays reflecting early times when Lake Michigan steamers arrived from Chicago, cottage life on Glen Lake, and time spent on North Manitou Island before the 1970 establishment of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The love he felt for these pristine landscapes can be seen in his photographs, sought and collected today. Also included are writings by Julie Terry Dickinson, writer of the popular Leelanau Enterprise column "Leelanau Lookout." Anyone who enjoys history and beautiful photography will love this book.
