In the heart of East London, where the rhythmic beats of music and the intoxicating aroma of spices mingle in the air, our family's chilli crisps have a story as rich and vibrant as the cultural tapestry that inspired them. It all began with Pops, our dad, whose love of chilli, spices and food was rooted in his Kenyan upbringing via India, and then London. Growing up in Nairobi, Kenya, Pops developed an early passion for chilli, and his after-school adventures often led him to a popular snack—Mogo. This Kenyan delicacy, crafted from cassava, a starchy root vegetable, was transformed into chip-shaped delights through a meticulous charring process over an open flame by local street-food vendors. The magic happened when the smoky chips were adorned with a squeeze of zesty lemon, a generous sprinkling of salt, and, of course, copious amounts of chilli—fiery and bold. Pops and his friends relished these Mogo chips, savouring the perfect blend of heat, tanginess, and saltiness. The memory of those afternoons lingered, and when Pops later found himself in East London, he couldn't help but bring the essence of his beloved Mogo to our family gatherings. Growing up, Pops would take control of seasoning the Mogo after my mum had fried them (rather than grilling) to make them extra crunchy. This way, he could make sure they tasted exactly the same for us (his kids) as they did when he was growing up. We loved the flavour of these Mogo so much, we decided to put the magic combination of chilli, lemon and cracked salt on perfectly sliced and fried British potatoes; transformed into golden crisps, crunched loudly with each bite, offering a satisfying contrast to the explosion of flavours within. The chilli, selected with care, added a warmth that danced on the taste buds, while the lemon lent a citrusy-zing that balanced the spice. As we savoured these chilli crisps, we weren't just indulging in a delicious snack. We were reliving the laughter-filled afternoons in Kenya, the music
