Imam Razi's masterwork is renowned for its depth in theology, logic, and the rational sciences. It explores the connection between Quranic verses and philosophy, making it indispensable for advanced study. ● Tafsir Ibn Kathir — Tafseer al-Qur'an al-Azeem By Ismail ibn Umar ibn Kathir (c. 1300 CE) The gold standard for hadith-based Quran interpretation. Relied upon by scholars worldwide, Ibn Kathir interprets the Quran using the Quran itself, authentic Sahih Hadith, and statements of the Sahaba (Companions), strictly avoiding unverified Isra'iliyyat narrations. ● Tafsir al-Zamakhshari — Al-Kashshaf By Abu al-Qasim Mahmud al-Zamakhshari (467–538 AH / 1075–1144 CE) The gold standard for Arabic linguistic and rhetorical (balagha) analysis of the Quran. Celebrated by scholars for centuries for its precise analysis of grammar and literary eloquence, revealing the miraculous nature of the Quranic text. ● Ruh al-Ma'ani — Spirit of the Meaning By Mahmud al-Alusi (1217–1270 AH / 1802–1854 CE) An expansive late-classical commentary that masterfully blends traditional narration-based tafsir with rational and spiritual insights. Imam Alusi provides a comprehensive synthesis of earlier scholarship, making it one of the most rich and detailed works of the later era. ● Maariful Quran By Mufti Muhammad Shafi (c. 1970) The most widely read modern Urdu tafsir, now available in English. An eight-volume masterpiece covering fiqh rulings, contemporary issues, and practical guidance for everyday Muslim life. Bridges traditional scholarship with modern-day questions. ● Tafheemul Quran By Syed Abul Ala Maududi (1972) A groundbreaking modern commentary that goes beyond ritualistic interpretation. Maududi contextualizes the Quran's guidance across politics, economics, history, sociology, and social justice — making it one of the most influential tafsirs of the 20th century. ● Asbab al-Nuzul — Occasions of Revelation By Ali ibn Ahmad al-Wahidi (d. 468 AH / 1075 CE) The definitive work on why and when Quranic verses were revealed. Al-Wahidi's pioneering compilation provides essential historical context for over 570 of the Quran's 6,236 verses — the standard reference for all subsequent works in this field.
