MSPs in the Scottish Parliament have voted to approve the Emergency Early Release of some people in their care. This means, some people will be released from custody earlier than their original date of liberation. Only certain people are eligible – those serving short-term sentences of less than four years who are within 180 days of their release date. There are also a range of additional exclusions, including for certain offences, as well as a Governor’s veto. Early releases will begin on 11 November and will continue on a regular basis until April 2026. Everyone in custody who is affected by this will receive confirmation of their new release date in writing. They will be supported to speak to their loved ones so that they can share this news.
