The journey along ancient pilgrimage routes took me through countless fields and woods, onto high plateaus and down to river basins, and inside dozens of medieval churches and towns. Walking for six to eight hours a day, I found I needed to move ever more slowly to take in all that I was seeing and hearing. This experience contrasted the relentless pace of my work life.I found in making these paintings and vessels the same deep pleasure of slowing down, focusing on each individual plant in the field or fold in a form. These vessels--empty, still, vertical—hint at the container’s promise to hold. Each pot forms a pathway across furrowed fields, climbing upward in a journey of making. Their hollow volumes embody a delicate struggle, shifting and listing as they grew. The challenge was how to maintain balance, to remain standing against the pull of gravity.Four shields feature a vermillion ground—or sky—filled with cut flowers, as though thrown from a huge bouquet, frozen in mid-flight. Birds traverse the field likewise occupied by earthy creatures, a sheep, a goat, rabbits. All are free to roam this floating space.This project, in many ways, is as Simone Weil suggests in Gravity and Grace, ‘to see a landscape as it is when I am not there… WhenI am in any place, I disturb the silence of heaven and earth by my breathing and the beating of my heart.’” – Kim Dickey Kim Dickey received a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from Alfred University, NY.
